Tonsillitis
Tonsillitis
Tonsillitis is a common condition in children characterized by inflammation of the tonsils, which are two small glands located at the back of the throat. It is often caused by a viral or bacterial infection and can result in symptoms such as sore throat, difficulty swallowing, fever, swollen glands in the neck, and a scratchy or muffled voice. Tonsillitis is more common in children than in adults and can be quite uncomfortable, but it is usually not serious and can be treated effectively with home care and, in some cases, medication.
Treatment for tonsillitis in children depends on the cause and severity of the infection. Viral tonsillitis will typically resolve on its own with rest, fluids, and over-the-counter pain relievers to alleviate symptoms. Bacterial tonsillitis, often caused by streptococcal bacteria (strep throat), may require antibiotics prescribed by a healthcare provider.

Symptoms of tonsillitis in children can include sore throat, difficulty swallowing, fever, swollen glands in the neck, and a scratchy or muffled voice. In some cases, children may also experience bad breath, stomachache, or headache.
Tonsillitis is most commonly caused by viruses, such as the common cold virus or the flu virus. Bacterial infections, particularly streptococcal bacteria (strep throat), can also cause tonsillitis.
Tonsillitis is diagnosed based on symptoms and a physical examination of the throat. In some cases, a throat swab may be taken to determine if the infection is bacterial or viral.
